I still remember my first day at college vividly. It was such a memorable experience that it has stayed with me to this day. Having achieved a First Division in the Matriculation Examination, my father decided to send me to college. So, I decided to take admission to Government College University GCU, Lahore. One day, we went to the college together. We got the admission form, filled it up, and had it signed by the Principal. After depositing the dues, I officially became a college student. I felt immense pride as I was allocated roll number 20. The timetable was displayed on the notice board, and soon, the classes began.

On the very first day, I arrived at the college early. At the gate, a group of senior students awaited us. They were there to welcome the newcomers with what they called “ragging” sessions. They passed funny remarks, calling us names like “first-year fools” and “taxis.” Some of them ordered us to stand in a line and march. Feeling nervous, I had no choice but to obey. These light-hearted pranks were part of the initiation, though it made me uneasy at the time.

At exactly 8 o’clock, the college bell rang. Our first English period was scheduled to be held in Room No. 5. Unfamiliar with the college layout, I nervously approached an innocent-looking senior boy and respectfully asked him about the room. To my dismay, he guided me to a girls’ classroom. As I stepped in, a roar of laughter erupted, and I quickly realized the prank. Embarrassed, I rushed out. Eventually, I managed to find the correct classroom.
The English lecturer arrived and began taking attendance. It was a lively and humorous scene. Some students responded to the roll call in English with “Yes, Sir,” while others did so in Urdu and Arabic. The lecturer, however, maintained his composure and advised us on discipline and behavior, making the class both informative and enjoyable.
College life memories
As the day progressed, we attended lectures in various rooms, moving from one subject to another. Each lecturer delivered general talks, sharing valuable insights into college life, academics, and the importance of discipline. Their encouraging words eased our fears and inspired us to embrace this new journey. Despite my initial nervousness, I began to feel more at ease, gradually adjusting to the unfamiliar environment. The warm and friendly demeanor of some teachers reassured me that college life was not just about studies but also about personal growth and building meaningful relationships.
However, the seniors were not done with us yet. On our way home, they caught us again. This time, we were pinched, boxed, and even slapped lightly. They took away our pens and notebooks, leaving us feeling helpless. Tears welled up in my eyes, but I reminded myself that every dark cloud has a silver lining. This began a new chapter—college life filled with ease, freedom, and opportunities.
